Exterior cladding in Altadena is now a code question before it is an appearance question. Since 1 January 2026, California’s wildland-urban interface rules require exterior wall coverings in designated areas to be noncombustible or ignition resistant.
Stucco is one of the materials that satisfies that as noncombustible. That is the practical reason a lot of East Altadena exterior work is going back on in stucco rather than in something else.
Stucco repair in East Altadena at a glance
Most East Altadena stucco repairs run $500 to $1,500 for crack repair and resurfacing, or $1,500 to $4,000 for a partial wall. Altadena is unincorporated, so permits go through Los Angeles County. Stucco counts as a noncombustible exterior wall covering under the current wildland-urban interface code.
What the wildland-urban interface code means for your walls
The rules people still call Chapter 7A were moved in the 2025 code cycle into a standalone California Wildland-Urban Interface Code, Title 24 Part 7, which took effect on 1 January 2026. Anything being rebuilt in a designated area has to meet it.
For exterior walls the requirement is straightforward in principle. The covering has to be noncombustible, or ignition resistant, or tested to the State Fire Marshal’s 12-7A-1 standard. Noncombustible means it passes ASTM E136. Stucco qualifies, as do masonry and metal. Fiber cement is generally treated as ignition resistant rather than noncombustible.
What that means in practice is that a correctly installed stucco assembly is one of the simpler ways to satisfy the exterior wall requirement, which is why it keeps appearing on rebuild plans in this area.
Two cautions. Compliance is about the whole assembly, not just the finish coat, so the lath, the weather-resistive barrier and the detailing around vents, eaves and windows all matter. And the designation applies by location, so confirm your parcel’s status with Los Angeles County rather than assuming it from the street you live on.
Where East Altadena stands
The Eaton Fire started near Eaton Canyon on 7 January 2025 and burned 14,021 acres before it was contained on 31 January. It destroyed 9,418 structures and damaged another 1,071, which makes it the second most destructive wildfire in California history. Rebuilding has been slower than anyone wanted: as of early 2026, fewer than one in five of the homes lost had a rebuilding permit issued, with thousands more applications still under review. County permit approval for a standard rebuild has been averaging around five months.
Not every property here is a total rebuild. A large number of houses that survived took radiant heat, ember damage and smoke on their exterior walls without burning down, and that damage is often not obvious from the sidewalk. Heat-crazed stucco, cracked finish coats and failed sealant joints around windows are common on standing houses in the fire footprint.
Stucco services we provide in East Altadena
- Repair and resurfacing on walls that took radiant heat and ember damage
- Full re-stucco, two-coat over sound existing or three-coat over new lath
- Noncombustible exterior wall assemblies for rebuild projects
- Weather-resistive barrier and lath replacement
- Crack repair and texture matching on foothill homes outside the fire footprint
Where stucco is the wrong rebuild for an elevation, that part of the scope goes to our exterior siding crew.
What stucco repair costs in East Altadena
| Service | Typical range | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Small crack repair and resurfacing | $500 to $1,500 | Number of locations, texture matching, color blending |
| Partial wall repair | $1,500 to $4,000 | Height, access, how far the damage runs behind the lath |
| Full-house stucco installation | $10,000 to $25,000+ | Size, condition, and the finish the house needs |
Final costs vary based on property size, condition and finish requirements. These are the ranges Stucco Contractor Pro publishes for stucco work. Your written estimate turns them into one fixed number after the site walk.
Foothill lots add two things to a quote here. Sloped access often means scaffolding on the downhill elevations. And on a house in the fire footprint, the sounding pass frequently finds heat damage well beyond the visible cracking, which changes the scope before it changes the price.
When stucco repair is the wrong purchase
We will tell you not to spend the money in three situations. If the wall has taken enough heat that the finish coat is crazed across a whole elevation, patching sections of it is throwing money at a wall that needs recoating. If you are rebuilding and the design is not settled, exterior work is the last thing to commit to, not the first. And if your parcel’s wildland-urban interface designation has not been confirmed with the county, waiting a week for that answer is cheaper than putting up an assembly that fails inspection.
How the job runs
We start with two questions rather than one: what condition the wall is actually in, and what the parcel is required to meet. Then we sound every elevation, which on a fire-exposed house routinely maps damage well past what shows. You get a written scope that says plainly what is repair and what is code-driven, so you can take it to your county submission or your insurer without translating it. Cure time is not compressed to hit a date. The site is tidied daily and the same people are on your job from first day to last.

Frequently asked questions
Is stucco allowed under the new wildland-urban interface code?
Yes. Exterior wall coverings in designated areas must be noncombustible, ignition resistant, or tested to State Fire Marshal standard 12-7A-1. Stucco is noncombustible, so it satisfies the requirement. Compliance depends on the whole wall assembly and its detailing, not on the finish coat alone.
What replaced Chapter 7A?
In the 2025 code cycle the Chapter 7A provisions were moved out of the California Building Code and into a standalone California Wildland-Urban Interface Code, Title 24 Part 7, effective 1 January 2026. Most people still call the requirements Chapter 7A.
My house did not burn but the stucco looks wrong. What happened?
Radiant heat and ember exposure can craze a finish coat, open hairline cracking and destroy sealant joints around windows without igniting the structure. It is common on standing houses inside the fire footprint, and the extent is usually larger than what is visible.
Who issues the permit for a rebuild in Altadena?
Altadena is unincorporated, so building permits are issued by Los Angeles County rather than by the City of Pasadena. County approval for a standard rebuild has been averaging around five months.
How much does stucco repair cost in East Altadena?
Crack repair and resurfacing runs $500 to $1,500 and partial wall repair runs $1,500 to $4,000. A full-house installation runs $10,000 to $25,000 or more. Sloped access and heat damage found during the sounding pass are what move an East Altadena number within those ranges.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you match my existing stucco texture in East Altadena?
Yes. Matching texture and color is what makes a repair disappear instead of standing out. On East Altadena homes we blend the finish so the patch is not visible from the street.
How long does a stucco job take on a East Altadena home?
A repair is often a day or two; a full three-coat application takes longer because each coat has to cure. We give you a realistic schedule up front rather than rushing the cure.
Is stucco a good choice for East Altadena’s climate?
Stucco suits Southern California well: durable, low-maintenance, and able to handle dry heat and winter rain when applied and cured correctly. Proper detailing keeps a East Altadena home watertight.
How do I choose a stucco contractor in East Altadena?
Look for a licensed contractor who talks about prep, cure times, and matching your finish, not just price. We are happy to walk your East Altadena property and explain what your wall needs.
